Position Title: Forestry Technician II (Law Enforcement Officer)

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Under general supervision, performs technical duties in a forestry management program. Supervises a fire suppression team. Provides and conducts forestry law enforcement duties. Assists professional foresters in the preparation and implementation of forest management plans, reforestation, or other landowner services.
  • Performs wildland fire control planning and directs fire suppression activities. Performs and conducts forestry law enforcement. Investigates fires to determine cause and damages. Performs wildland fire prevention work. Ensures that preventive maintenance goals are met. 
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises a fire suppression team. Ensures the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) planning stages and evaluations are completed within the agency's policy/procedures. 
  • Performs administrative duties to include review of monthly forest fire activity reports. Assists professional foresters in the preparation and implementation of forest management plans, reforestation, or other landowner services. 
  • Provides technical assistance to local governments on forestry issues. stays current of state and local affairs affecting forestry. Works cooperatively with local governments to promote forestry and sound forestry practices. Participates in allied forestry organizations' activities. 
  • Participates in activities in support of agency's mission and goals, and performs other related duties as required.

Position Requirements:

  • A high school diploma and two years of experience in forest fire control, forestry management, LE, or nursery operations. Must pass the initial physical fitness test of walking two (2) miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements.
  • Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal. Criminal background check and drug test are required.
  • Position requires a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Must have Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) prior to employment. Must complete CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory training within 15 working days of hire then obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 90 working days.
  • Ability to obtain a Class I law enforcement certification within one year of employment.
  • Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions. 
  • Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 16 days) on large fire incidents in/out of the state. 
  • This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace-CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing.
