Weyerhaeuser is searching for a Research Forester to join our Southern Timberlands Technology (STT) Team that develops and implements new technology for managing southern pine ecosystems. As a Research Forester, your role involves supporting all aspects of the Production Forestry field research program, collaborating with scientists and project leaders to ensure successful research site selection, preparation, establishment, maintenance, measurement, and documentation of field test sites.

Key Functions

Manage contractors and conducting research in silviculture, forest soils, tree genetics, remote sensing, plant pathology and nutrition
Actively participate in transfer ring research outcomes to Operations (managers, foresters, planners, and other stakeholders) through group presentations, field tours, and technical reports
Demonstrate a commitment to safety, excellent communication, and coordination with the STT Team and Operational Foresters to facilitate the installation and maintenance of research sites in Timberlands
Assist in all facets of the Production Forestry Field Research Program (Nursery, Forest Health, and silviculture) and contribute to other related areas of research such as Environmental, Tree Improvement, and Biometric as needed
Remain current on relevant scientific advances, understand operational forestry practices, and identify research opportunities that align with operational needs.

Qualifications
Bachelors degree (or higher) in Forest Management, Silviculture, Soils, or a closely related field
Basic understanding of a broad range of core competencies including plantation nutrition, tree physiology, tree genetics, soils, growth and yield, and silvicultural systems
Field forestry experience
Contract administration (both preparing contracts and managing the contractor for safety, execution, and quality control)
Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and GIS skills
Ability to interpret and communicate remotely sensed data
Knowledge of statistical software: R (preferred) or SAS
Knowledge of experimental design and the importance of data quality
Excellent team working skills
Ability to work alone safely, often in remote areas and with standard forestry tools
Proactive problem solving skills
Ability to travel up to 40% of the time, sometimes 1-2 weeks at a time often requiring irregular work hours
Willing and able to earn a UAV pilots license within 6 months of starting and a pesticide applicators license within 12 months

Preferred Qualifications

At least 2 years of relevant experience
Strong math, analytical and financial analysis skills including but not limited to interpreting research data, understanding discounted cash flows, understanding forest inventory data and interpreting growth and yield model outputs
Familiarity with spatial and tabular data in GIS and databases
Herbicide, pesticide and fertilizer application management
Experience with UAVs (drones)


What We Offer

Compensation: This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $66,703 - $100,055 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 5% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.

Retirement: Employees are able to enroll in our company’s 401k plan, which includes a paid company match in addition to our annual contribution equal to 5% of your base salary.

Paid Time Off or Vacation: We provide eligible employees who are scheduled to work 25 hours or more per week with 3-weeks of paid vacation to use during your first year of employment. In addition, after being employed for six months, eligible employees begin to accrue vacation for future use. We also recognize eleven paid holidays per year, providing a total of 88 holiday hours
