Job Description: 

The Assistant District Forester/State Forest Program Specialist manages the state forests within  the Cumberland District to improve the sustainability, health and diversity of those forests. This  position leads a team of foresters, forestry technicians and forestry aides to manage forests  owned by the Division of Forestry for revenue, demonstration and multi-use purposes. 

Specific Job Duties: 

PLANNING 

1. Provides input and information to State Forest Unit Leader and District Forester concerning the health and sustainability of the state forests in Cumberland District. 2. Manage the resources of the state forests using the guidance of Best Management Practices (BMPs), Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Compartment Planning Handbook. 

3. Oversees and develops Forest and Compartment Plans for each state forest with the district. 

4. Plans and executes demonstration areas that illustrate sustainable silviculture techniques to the public and other forestry professionals. 

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION 

1. Work with the State Forest Management Team to collaborate on planning and operational activities. 

2. Develop a 10-year harvest plan for each forest that maximizes the allowable harvest and regeneration of health stands within the forest boundary. 

3. Develop and implement training opportunities for divisions personnel as well as landowners of Tennessee to improve the knowledge base concerning forest management.

4. Work to promote cooperative partnerships with Tennessee Wildlife Recourses Agency (TWRA) and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) that will further Forestry as well as the State Forests System. 

5. Assist the District Forester with the assessment of forest management practices to help protect conserve, enhance and protect the forest of west Tennessee, both public and private alike. 

6. Conduct planned silviculture activities such as timber harvesting, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, herbicide spraying, etc. 

7. Provides administrative & programmatic support to the District Forester. FISCAL ADMINISTRATION 

1. Follows all state purchasing processes and policies and ensures those same policies and processes are adhered to by both direct reports and indirect reports 2. Manages the district’s state forest budgets and secures supplies/materials. 

SUPERVISON 

1. Directly supervises three state forest foresters and indirectly supervises four other state forest personnel. 

2. Develops annual Individual Performance Plans and conducts interim and annual reviews for direct reports
