Roots run deep. See how our friend Jake's roots with his family's sawmill helped shaped his future in the forest industry.

Meet Jake Martin, a forester and logging manager for Mountain Oak Mill. Jake is 24 years old and originally from Columbus, GA. His family was involved in sawmilling early in his life and he knew he wanted to get back into the industry as an adult. He began working for Mountain Oak Mill in 2021, after graduating from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. Mountain Oak Mill has facilities in Hamilton, GA and Montgomery, AL. They use hardwood timber to produce railroad ties and some lumber.

Jake’s day-to-day job responsibilities include meeting with landowners, overseeing logging crews, procuring wood, and managing the mill’s wood flow. His favorite part of his job is that no two days look the same. He is always being presented with new challenges and opportunities to work through.

When asked if he had any advice for other people wanting to work in the forest industry he stated “Get into it as early as you can because you never stop learning and there’s a constant flow of opportunities”.
