Can Diesel Mechanics, Firefighting, and Education Come Together to Shape a Career in Forestry?

Carson Riley began his career as a diesel mechanic while also volunteering as a firefighter in his hometown of Maplesville, AL. It was during a brush fire call that he first encountered the Alabama Forestry Commission. Working alongside the AFC team ignited a new passion in him; he realized that while he enjoyed his work as a mechanic, his true calling was found in firefighting and public service.

His decision to pursue a position with the Alabama Forestry Commission was inspired not only by his love for combating fires but also by the organization's focus on community outreach and education. Carson’s desire to educate others, especially the next generation about forestry, is rooted in the dedication his mother demonstrated as a teacher. Her influence instilled in him a deep appreciation for service and education, making his role with the AFC a perfect fit.

Now serving as a Forest Ranger in Chilton County, Carson embodies the idea that life experiences can prepare us for unexpected opportunities. His journey demonstrates how a variety of skills and experiences can converge to shape a fulfilling career.

When asked what advice he would offer to aspiring forestry professionals, Carson emphasized the importance of self-belief and seizing educational opportunities: “Don’t let anyone hold you back. If you put your mind to it, you can do it; you are the only one who will limit yourself. Take the educational opportunities when they come. Set your heart to it and get it done.”

Carson Riley is not just a Forest Ranger; he is an advocate for forestry education and his community, proving that with determination and the right mindset, anyone can forge their own path in the field of forestry.
