This year’s Read Across America Week, March 2-7, was a celebration of storytelling, sustainability, and the important role forests play in our lives—all thanks to the help of the Tiny Timber Crew®!
Across the state of Alabama, more than 2,000 students in over 120 classrooms were introduced to Lucy, Travis, and Sam—three young adventurers featured in the Tiny Timber Crew book series. Each story—Lucy Meets a Logger, Travis Visits a Tree Farm, and Sam Visits a Sawmill—helps children learn about sustainable forestry while reinforcing a love of reading and a respect for the environment.
ForestryWorks® of Alabama partnered with conservation leaders and forestry professionals to visit elementary classrooms across the state, bringing the stories to life and engaging students in hands-on activities. These lessons highlighted the importance of sustainable forestry, the everyday value of forest products, and how forest management supports both our environment and our communities.
Participating organizations included:
- Alabama Forestry Commission
- Butler County Commission for Economic Development
- Chilton County Natural Resources Council
- Crenshaw County Forestry Planning Committee
- Cullman County Conservation District
- Cullman County Natural Resources Planning Committee
- Cullman County USDA Farm Services Agency
- Morgan County Conservation District
- Walker County Conservation District

Thanks to these dedicated groups, students not only celebrated reading—they also gained a deeper appreciation for the forests around them and the people who help take care of them. More than 75 books were donated to local classrooms and libraries during the week, helping the Tiny Timber Crew continue to inspire the next generation of readers, thinkers, and forest industry leaders—one classroom at a time.
