REPORTS TO: General Manager
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS
The Pellet Mill Manager is responsible for the overall management, operation, and performance of the pellet mill facility. This includes production, maintenance, quality control, safety, environmental compliance, staffing, and cost management. The manager will ensure the facility operates efficiently, meets production targets, and maintains product quality standards while upholding company safety and environmental policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Leadership
- Plan, organize, and oversee day-to-day pellet mill operations to meet production goals.
- Monitor and optimize equipment utilization, throughput, and overall plant efficiency.
- Ensure proper handling, drying, and processing of raw material into finished pellets.
- Safety & Compliance
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Oversee environmental compliance related to air emissions, dust collection, and waste management.
- Ensure strict adherence to housekeeping and fire mitigation standards.
- Maintenance & Equipment Reliability
- Coordinate preventive and predictive maintenance programs to minimize downtime.
- Troubleshoot operational and mechanical issues with pelletizers, dryers, conveyors, and related systems.
- Quality Control
- Ensure pellets meet customer and industry standards for size, durability, and moisture content.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives for quality assurance.
- Cost Control
- Develop and manage cost controls for labor, materials, and maintenance.
- Monitor expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Team Management
- Recruit, train, and lead plant personnel, including supervisors, operators, and maintenance staff.
- Set clear performance expectations and conduct regular evaluations.
- Production Reporting & Metrics
- Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) related to production, downtime, quality, and safety.
- Analyze data to improve operations and meet company objectives.
Qualifications:
- A degree in Industrial Management, Forestry, or a related field (preferred) OR equivalent experience in pellet mill or wood processing operations.
- 5+ years of leadership experience in pellet mills, sawmills, or wood manufacturing facilities.
- Strong knowledge of biomass pelletizing processes and wood drying systems.
- Proficient in preventive maintenance planning and troubleshooting mechanical/electrical systems.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and NFPA regulations related to wood product facilities.
- Proficiency in MS Office with preferred knowledge of ADP Human Resources Management Software and CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems)
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
- Ability to work in an industrial environment with exposure to dust, noise, and varying temperatures.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and climb ladders or stairs frequently.
- Availability for extended hours or call-ins as needed.
