The Saw filer / Benchman is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and sharpening saws and other cutting tools used in the sawmill, ensuring maximum efficiency, safety, and product quality. This includes working with band saws, circular saws, guides, and other sawing components critical to cutting pine logs and producing dimensional lumber.

Key Responsibilities:

Inspect, sharpen, level, tension, and align saws (band and circular) to ensure accurate and safe cutting performance.

Perform regular maintenance on saws, saw guides, and related components.

Bench saws to maintain proper tension and shape, and troubleshoot issues affecting sawing performance.

Maintain an inventory of saws and filing room supplies; ensure saws are ready and available for each shift.

Work with mill supervisors and sawyers to identify saw-related issues and recommend corrective actions.

Set up and operate filing room machinery such as grinders, welders, and tensioning equipment.

Keep detailed maintenance and sharpening records as required.

Follow safety protocols and wear proper PPE while working with sharp and rotating equipment.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Previous experience as a saw filer or benchman in a pine or hardwood sawmill.

Strong understanding of saw geometry, tensioning, and proper blade care.

Familiarity with filing room equipment and safe tool-handling practices.

Good mechanical skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Physical Requirements:

Stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks.

Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Work in hot, dusty, and loud environments.

Use of safety equipment (gloves, eye and hearing protection) is mandatory.

Work Schedule:

Full-time, with possible overtime or weekend hours depending on production demands
