POSITION PURPOSE:
In this role you will conduct field surveys for spotted owls and other species as required by Green Diamond’s Forest Habitat Conservation Plan. The biological survey work is critical for ensuring full compliance with the California Forest Practice Rules for Timber Harvest Planning (THP) and operations. The biological survey work will be conducted from February through July.
The balance of the year (August through January) will require this role to work in forestry and harvest operations. In forestry the incumbent conducts THP layout such as flagging, tree marking, and stream classification. Included at times may be Silviculture tasks which includes land exams, monitoring tree planting, fuel reduction, and pre-commercial thinning projects. In operations, road assessment tasks are conducted in conjunction with the Aquatic Habitat Conservation Plan to monitor and mitigate impacts to the aquatic resources on the property.
Across all disciplines, this role is responsible for accurate data collection, helping with data entry, and preparation for various projects.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, forest management, natural resources or closely related fields of study in either/both disciplines, or equivalent work experience.
- General knowledge of local terrestrial vertebrates.
- Demonstrated use of basic field measurement tools (logger’s tape, clinometer, hand compass, hand level).
- Demonstrated use of topographic maps and aerial photos in a forest landscape.
- Experience in road design, stream crossings, drainage systems, hydrologic influences on road networks, and erosion control and maintenance.
- Current valid driver’s license.
Desired:
- Education or experience with Wildlife and/or Forest Management
- Education or experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems
- Familiarity with a variety of vertebrate survey techniques including capture and immobilization, remote cameras, and radio-telemetry
- Experience driving 4-wheel drive pickups and all-terrain vehicles
