POSITION PURPOSE:

This position performs routine nursery labor and administrative functions as directed by the Nursery Supervisor and the Nursery Production Coordinator. The Nursery Technician may be assigned cultural, research, biological, mechanical, or administrative duties to support the seedling production, maintenance and/or repair of the nursery facility and reforestation crops. Assignments will include seedling mowing and raking, seedling measurements, establishment, and measurement of nursery trials, weed control in and around greenhouses, machinery operation, field trial establishment and data collection, and routine preventative repairs and maintenance in and around the nursery, greenhouses, and orchards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)

  • Performs required routine cultural tasks from hand weeding, to removing insects and disease, soil mixing, fertilizing, container cleaning and sanitation, driving forklift, involving repetitive and tedious physical work.
  • Assures greenhouses and machinery used for seedling preparation are in good working order and properly maintained.
  • Supports the Nursery Production Coordinator in the nursery research, including the establishment, and evaluation of trials to increase nursery efficiencies and seedling quality.
  • Supports the Nursery Production Coordinator in inventorying seedlings in greenhouses and during packing, including measurements of number of seedlings, caliper, height, dry weights.
  • Supports the Nursery Production Coordinator in seedling tissue sampling and soil sampling for nutritional analysis.
  • Keep open areas around the Korbel nurseries including the greenhouses clean and free of any type of waste or refuse.
  • Mows, weed-eats, prunes around the nursery ground to maintain landscaping.
  • Ensures fire protection equipment is properly maintained and up to date.
  • Perform minor repairs to the inside of the offices and greenhouses as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to accept responsibility, demonstrate sound approaches to problem solving and follow through with tasks to completion.
  • Must have good mechanical aptitude to work around nursery equipment, irrigation system(s) and building maintenance.
  • Ability to handle awkward loads such as bales of soil, multiple shifts in weight as with water bags, or buckets, etc.
  • Learns, applies, and retains new methods and information. Creative in solving problems. Exhibits a “can do” attitude with a positive approach to challenges. Views obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow.
  • Ability to be highly motivated, self-directed, and able to work a flexible schedule.
