General position summary:

Mason, Bruce & Girard (MB&G) is growing and in need of a Registered Professional Forester (RPF). Preference will be given to applicants located within 75 miles of Sonora, CA. The successful applicant will be a client and project lead. Work will entail support of forest health and fuels reduction projects, THP/timber sale preparation and administration, contractor selection and oversight. Approximately 70% of projects are located within a 1.5-hour travel time from our base location of Sonora, CA. The remaining 30% are located within northern and Central California. The work is split 60% in the field and 40% in the office.

Essential Functions/Work Assignment Examples:

  • Assessing forested areas and developing treatment prescriptions.
  • Planning, layout, and operational supervision of forest restoration and fuel reduction, and timber harvesting projects on private and public lands.
  • Field reconnaissance, mapping, and layout.
  • Treatment feasibility analysis and cost estimation.
  • Harvest document preparation (THP’s, Exemptions, Emergency Notices).
  • Biological and botanical scoping for NEPA and CEQA analysis.
  • Administration of restoration contracts including thinning and mastication,
  • Project mapping and GIS analysis using office and field-based GIS applications.
  • Unit layout, timber cruising, and timber marking.
  • Timber sale preparation and administration.
  • Check cruising and data quality control.
  • Hazard tree assessments.
  • Lead field projects and provide direction and oversight to forest technicians.
  • Primary client contact during projects.
  • Project manager of small and complex projects.
  • Support proposal preparation and project bidding.
  • Supervise daily activities of forest operations and associated subcontractors.

Job Conditions:

  • Work is performed both within the field and in our offices.
  • Field work is to be performed in all weather conditions, steep, rough terrain, and a variety of settings including open fields and forested areas.
  • Personal vehicle suitable for use in forest environment required.
  • Periodic work around the Sierra foothills is expected.
  • Periodic overnight travel.

Job Skills:

  • Working knowledge of forest management and related timber harvesting operations.
  • Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office and Excel, ArcGIS a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic and team-oriented individual.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • California RPF license. Consideration given to applicants who are eligible to take the test at the next available opportunity.
  • B.A./B.S. in Forestry, natural resources, or related field.
  • Ability to complete fieldwork in steep and brushy terrain under all weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of California Forest Practice Rules.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office programs and Esri’s ArcGIS.
  • Positive and motivated.
